Pregnancy At 50

Giving birth is one thing that a woman is born to fill with. And when does it stop? Do women can become pregnant at 50?

Getting pregnant is one of the most wonderful thing that could ever happen to a woman, everyone longs to have a child of their own, and that is something that you couldn’t get with a single snap. Pregnancy could be the happiest moment of a woman’s life, and also could be the most dangerous, there’s the risk of miscarriage, which will be drastic loss for an expectant mother. For the previous years, Teen pregnancy issues sprung out, teen pregnancy leads to a greater population in the future, a teen mother for instances could have an unhealthy baby due to lack of nutrients that a teen mother secretes to give off to the baby, and the undeveloped womb that would carry the baby for 9 months., these are downfalls of teen pregnancy. But this issue has long gone, and now another issue got into people’s attention, and that’s being pregnant at 50. 

Recent studies said that getting pregnant at 50 has become more possible, and that is possible due to advances in assisted reproductive technology, in particular egg donation. Women’s fecundity ends with menopause, which means that 12 consecutive months of not having a period. Menopause or Perimenopause begins between 40-51 of age, and fertility can and often ends at this stage. This is when women’s period usually become irregular and eventually stop. But there are times that women still have their regular menstruation, but the quality of the fertilized egg of women in this age is seemingly low than in younger women. Also the chances of conceiving  a healthy is low, particularly at the age of forties. Men on the other hand remain fertile throughout their lives, but risks of genetic deficiency is immensely increased, whereas paternal age effect is involved. This refer to the statistical relationship wherein the effects are 1.) a man’s age to sperm and semen abnormalities, 2.) man’s fertility, 3.) man’s age could put his female partner’s pregnancy to danger (miscarriage and fetal death) 4.) a father’s age at the birth of his offspring will have a health-related deficiency, specifically decreased intelligence, autism, down syndrome, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Genetic quality of sperm decrease with age, men might experience a decline in fertility starting in the late 30’s.

The risk of pregnancy increases as the mother’s age increases, the risks associated with pregnancy at 50 include an increased incidence of gestational diabetes, hypertension, and the baby will most likely be delivered by caesarean section, and an increases instances of miscarriage, preeclampsia, and placenta previa. Even the risk of fetal mortality is tripled.

Giving birth is not really easy, especially when your age is a factor, women who are pregnant at the age of 50 should be more cautious, and should be knowledgeable of the situation they’re in, and shouldn’t take it for granted. There are ways to keep the mother and the baby safe from peril, because not only the baby could be in great danger but also the mother who is carrying it, and sometimes, both.
